Literacy ~ Persuasive advertisements

Persuasive advertisements

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE AND TUNING IN

Students were asked to bring cut-outs of their favourite advertisements to the class. Using K-W-L chart, teacher filled in all the information students knew about what makes a good and an appealing ad in ‘K’ column (what I KNOW).

Students watched a ppt – Key features of adverts. Students were then divided into groups and did an activity describing features of their advertisements by placing the cut-outs of ads on the table. Each table then gave a brief presentation.

FINDING OUT

Students were shown videos of a good ad (Cadbury’s Gorilla) and a bad ad (Evian Roller babies) without informing the students which ad was good or bad. Using the ‘Brainstorming key’, they discussed to find out which one is the best ad and using ‘Disadvantages Key’ which one is not.

Using K-W-L chart, teacher filled in the questions of students the information they would like to know about what could make a good and an appealing ad in ‘W’ column (what I WOULD like to know).

The word meaning ~ PERSUASIVE

Students found out the meaning of word “Persuasive”, by brainstorming.

This is what students themselves came up with the meaning of “Persuasive” –

Persuasive means to convince, to influence, to make you do it, to tempt you, to motivate etc.

They then watched a power point presentation on ‘Persuasive Advertisement writing’.
They came to know the key features that makes an appealing ad which they noted down in their notebooks.

Numeracy ~ MONEY

Numeracy ~ MONEY

Provocation:

A story on ‘Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday’ by Judith Viorst was played to them on the computer using speakers and also reinforcing their listening skills. Students then reflected on the story by sharing their ideas on needs and wants.

Students were then asked to pick one need and want and whether it would be possible to satisfy it with the clothes or toys they have. They came up with the need for money. We also discussed how money is different in different parts of the world yet has the power to purchase. Discussions lead to various currencies used across the globe.

Reflections - Celebrating cracker-less Diwali

Celebrating cracker-less Diwali

As a holiday project, students were asked to prepare their presentations on celebrating cracker less Diwali. Students came up with wonderful & colourful presentations on suggesting why it is very important to have cracker less Diwali.

Children's day

CHILDREN’S DAY

This was a BIG SURPRISE for our students who came totally unaware to what teachers have been secretly planning for some weeks.

Students did get a little hint when they saw me; Ms. Judith dressed up as a school student to be the MC of the program. The program started with a little skit with Norbu Sir who was a teacher and Ms. Judith a student and went on with a brief power point presentation on children’s day celebrated in India on Chacha Nehru’s Birthday, 14th of November. (Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister of India) Students were also mesmerised to see a musical video the ‘lost children’ a song sung by late Michael Jackson on ‘International children’s day’ to promote that every child has a right to have a home, education and above all love.

Students were then totally amazed and surprised to see their teachers & principal dancing and singing on famous Bollywood songs. Our co-ordinator; Ms. Malini also surprised the students by acting as a nursery child and reciting some famous poems.

Dr. Naidu was also presented for this performance and congratulated the teachers and wished our children a very happy children’s day.

So in a nutshell, on children’s day we as teachers have been dancers, singers, artists, jokers and also acted as students etc.

The things we do for our students just to say that we love them & appreciate them very much.
A very Happy Children’s day!!

HWOO - First line of inquiry

Provocation to the
First Line of Inquiry-

The role of demand and supply
Concept used ~ Function

Objective- To have students become aware that scarcity requires people to make choices when trying to satisfy their wants.

As a group activity, each group was given a paper bag with stationary items which were not sufficient enough for each member of the group to have. Students struggled dividing the items for each person as everyone wanted to have each item from the bag. After having a class discussion and understanding about “Needs and Wants”, they were able to sort things out easily as everyone was able to make the right choices and was contented to have what they need rather than fighting over things because others have them according to their needs.

UOI - HWOO - Central idea

Central Idea

Students unscrambled the central idea given to them and arrived at a meaningful sentence the pieces of the central idea that makes sense for them. In groups they reflected and looked for the key words. Using the Dictionary they wrote down the meaning of the key words on the hand out of central idea. They will keep adding their understanding of the central idea as the unit progresses using the ‘adventure gear’.

The Central idea~

Economic activity relies on systems of production, exchange and consumption of goods and services.

UOI- HWOO - TD Theme

Transdisciplinary Theme

How we organize ourselves
An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

Students worked on the different strands of the TD theme by discussing it in groups and presenting their understanding and the big ideas to the class.

UOI - HWOO- Provocation activity

Another Provocation

Understanding the difference between Needs and Wants

Students were given a scenario where they are about to land on an island and live there for a month they were to list down items essential for a survival kit as a group activity.  Later, students were given pictures of common items (i.e., food, cleaning products, clothes, candy, make up etc.) they will work in groups and classify the things as needs and wants.

Students came up with interesting ideas about ‘needs and wants’ for their survival kit. Most them wanted 3D LED television sets, Geronimo stilton books to read, Pizzas and burgers, mobile phones to play games in their spare time, a puppy to give them company and above all Lizol (a cleaning product) which would clean their floor and smell good. Well our students have NO IDEA what their essential needs are perhaps their wants have become needs for them.

Discussions lead to an understanding that Needs are as goods or services that are required. This would include the needs for food, clothing, shelter, health care. These are things you must have to live. Wants are goods or services that are not necessary but that we desire or wish for.

UOI - How we organise ourselves

How we organise ourselves

Provocation activity

The physical arrangement of a classroom is like a map that directs learning and can be arranged according to classroom goals and interests. The overall atmosphere of the classroom sets a stage for student interaction, management rituals, routines and a sense of community.

If not properly managed, the classroom can fall apart from being disorganized, unsafe and poorly constructed.  Well this is what happened in our classroom, when students were away for a specialist class, the whole class was dis-organised by us teachers (Provocation activity) having their school bags kept in different corners of the class and corridors. The stationary and notebooks were missing and students were completely taken aback as they started to feel frustrated because they were not able to do their class work.

This provocation activity enabled them to understand that organising oneself is not one person’s job and to get things work smoothly we need systems.

Their REFLECTIONS were ~

Dis-organised, Stressful, Tiring, Scattered, Life will be boring being consumed by useless thinking, Unnecessary work, Difficult, Hard, No study time, Uneasy, Always rushing, Exhausting, No fun, No rest, Lots of useless work, Wasting time, Empty handed, Doing wrong or useless work.
