‘Save the Last Word’
ARTEFACTS
Provocation to the first line of inquiry

Students activity; ‘Save the Last Word’. In groups of four, students each brought an artefact from home that they felt best represents themselves and then took turns to guess why the artefact had been chosen. Finally each student shared their reasons and were able to connect physical, social and emotional characteristics to their artefacts and compare similarities amongst themselves.

It was an interesting and fun activity getting to know each other and discovering what students value and hold dear to life...

...what a lovely bunch kids!!J

We all laugh in the same language
~ an inspiring video

Students watched a short video; ‘We all laugh in the same language’. A Russian student & an Indian student volunteered for an activity where they were both asked to greet each other in their own language. Then they were asked to laugh in their respective languages... and the rest is history... as you can imagine we had a hilarious time, and most importantly, students came to understand that we are all very similar in our emotional characteristics.

Central Idea
People are more alike than different from each other.

Group Activity
Students were divided in to four groups and were given cut-outs of words from the central idea. Their task was to frame a sentence in order to make meaning of their central idea.

Two groups came up with this Central Idea:
People are more different from each other than alike.

The other two groups came up with this Central Idea:
People are more alike than different from each other.

All the groups had valid reasons to prove their points. Interesting and well done kids!!

UGLY DUCKLING ~ a video
As a provocation to the unit of inquiry; ‘Who we are’, students watched a video – ‘Ugly Duckling’, which they enjoyed thoroughly. After that we had couple of brain storming sessions, where we asked a lot of questions like:
What were the problems the characters faced?
How did they solve these problems?
Who is your favorite character and why?
Which character don’t you like and why?
What lesson does this story teach you?
What were some of the things that were “ugly” about the “ugly duckling”? then share the things that weren't ugly.

·       What were some of the things that were “beautiful” about the “ugly duckling”?
·       Why did the ugly duckling run away from the farm?
·       How would you handle a situation where somebody was teasing you?
·       What happened to the geese the ugly duckling encountered?

·       Talk about a place where you feel “accepted.”
·       What other stories does this remind you of?
·       How does this story relate to your own life?
·       How are they different?
·       How are they similar?
·       Does being a beautiful swan means that the ugly duckling will
be happy? Was the ugly duckling too sensitive when reacting to others? For example: when he believed that the dog thought he was too ugly to bite, or that the children were teasing him when they just wanted to play with him.
It was interesting to see the answers students came up with and they knew much more than it was expected. They all agreed that we should not isolate if someone is different. They realised that even though the ugly duckling looked different she wasn’t ugly and she was beautiful in many other ways.

The Hare and the Tortoise

A story with a different ending.

Reflecting on Learner Profile & Attitudes.
Once upon a time Mr. Turtle was out for a walk. While he was walking he met Mr. Hare. The Hare said to the Turtle look at you, you are so slow…hahaha. Then the Turtle said I am slow but sure I am steady. The Hare didn’t listen but went on laughing. Race me said the Turtle. That will be so easy but if you want it I will do it said the Hare. Let’s race till the tree. Ready get set go!! The Hare was very enthusiastic he went easily. Then they both saw a mountain. Then something very strange happened the Hare was waiting at the mountain for the Turtle. When the Turtle came the Hare told him I can take you up the mountain. That was very caring of the Hare and he cooperated with the Turtle. Then they reached the tree together. The Turtle happily thanked the Hare. And the Hare happily appreciated it. The audience watching in the forest also appreciated the Hare. The End

Once in a town of Twidilly, Diddly Doo, there lived a Tortoise and a Hare but nobody knew why. Now the Tortoise was cunning and used a clever little trick every time he played a race. The trick was to go in his shell and roll himself all the way to the finish line. The animals did not notice this because they thought his shell was a rock rolling down the hill. The Tortoise was confident that nobody would find out his secret. The Hare was caring and good tempered fellow and before Tortoise came he used to win all the races without fail or cheating. Now the Hare was curious. Why is Tortoise winning every time? He thought. So next time there was a race and he saw Tortoise go into his shell but before he could roll downhill Hare caught his shell…Got you!! He cried. And soon the Tortoise was being put in the police van. The end

Rabbit was going to reach the finish line then suddenly he had more confidence. And then he looked back and saw he was behind the Tortoise. He tried to run faster and then finally came in front of the Tortoise. Then he saw that the finish line is invisible. Then he went near the lake. Then he saw a broken tree then he hopped over it and then he saw that the finish line is not over there it’s somewhere else then he hopped on that tree again and then he finally reached the finish line.

In the race a river interrupted. The Tortoise swims and passes the river. But the rabbit falls down in the river. Then the Tortoise helps him by going in the river and then put him on his shell and saving his life. Then the Tortoise dropped him. Then the Tortoise and rabbit move on. There comes the mountain. The Tortoise was not confident but the rabbit said you helped me in the river and now I will help you to climb the mountain. And they both reach the top of the mountain and there was the goal and they both win the race.

One day in the race the rabbit was unable to cross the river. The Tortoise was lucky because he was able to swim in the river. Then the rabbit was struggling to go across the river. Then he got an idea (Thinker). He was a risk taker to jump over the river. And he landed on the ground. And the Tortoise won. The Tortoise was caring and gave the medal to the rabbit. The end

Let’s start the race. When they started to run, Hare falls into the trap, he gets tired. Then the Hare went in the forest and the Tortoise scared the Hare, as Tortoise could win but Hare suddenly felt that he could win the race and was confident and focussed on the race and in the last the Hare wins. BACK TO SCHOOL
School bells are ringing, loud and clear;
Vacation's over, school is here.
We hunt our pencils and our books,
And say goodbye to fields and brooks,
To carefree days of sunny hours,
To birds and butterflies and flowers.
But we are glad school has begun.
For work is always mixed with fun.
When autumn comes and the weather is cool,
Nothing can take the place of school.
