Understanding the difference between Needs and Wants
Students were given a scenario where they are about to land on
an island and live there for a month they were to list down items essential for
a survival kit as a group activity.
Later, students were given pictures of common items (i.e., food, cleaning
products, clothes, candy, make up etc.) they will work in groups and classify
the things as needs and wants.
Students
came up with interesting ideas about ‘needs and wants’ for their survival kit.
Most them wanted 3D LED television sets, Geronimo stilton books to read, Pizzas
and burgers, mobile phones to play games in their spare time, a puppy to give
them company and above all Lizol (a cleaning product) which would clean their
floor and smell good. Well our students have NO IDEA what their essential needs
are perhaps their wants have become needs for them.
Discussions
lead to an understanding that Needs are as goods or services that are required.
This would include the needs for food, clothing, shelter, health care. These
are things you must have to live. Wants are goods or services that are not
necessary but that we desire or wish for.
