SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS
Coal Mining
Learning engagement:
The
activity is designed to help students experience the limited nature of
non-renewable fuel resources and issues of predicting how long fossil fuel
resources will last. Students will mine a cookie for “coal” (chocolate chips)
and compare the estimated amount of chocolate chip reserves with the actual
amount recovered.
Oil Spills
Students
were given a cup each with some water and a teaspoon of cooking oil was added
into it. They were first asked to weigh a feather’s lightness and then they
dipped the feather into the water and oil solution. Feather was heavy now. They
were then asked to clean it using a cotton ball and then a plastic spoon. They were
surprised to find out that it’s impossible to take the oil out. After watching
some videos they were taken aback to understand the plight of marine birds and
how harmful can oil & waste spilling be into the oceans and rivers. They repeated
the experiment by using an ice-cream stick.
